Default SPEKTRUM DX6i OWNERS, IMPORTANT READ!!

Just recived this information from Horrizon, Doesn't sound good so check your kit guy's id presume its newer TX's that could be effected,

October 20, 2009If you own a DX6i transmitter that has Product Identification Codes (PIDs) HA906X and HA907X, then please read the following advisory.

Product Identification (PID) code may be found on the inside of the battery compartment of the DX6i transmitter.

    PID within the battery compartment

PID on the DX6i box (beneath the UPC)

Our service centers in the US, UK, and Germany have received several reports of short circuits occurring in the DX6i, melting some interior components. The cause for this issue is an incorrect trainer jack used in the assembly. Use of these incorrect trainer jacks by either a buddy cable or a flight simulator cable can create a short circuit, causing energy from batteries to be released in the form of heat inside the transmitter, melting interior components and generating smoke. Our investigation shows that only a small percentage of the transmitters are affected, and the situation has now been corrected at the factory, but all transmitters with these two PIDs should be returned to Horizon for inspection and, if needed, repair. Even if you do not currently use or plan to use your trainer jack, please return the transmitter for inspection.
Please complete the on-line request and do not need their trainer jacks inspected.
If you have any questions, please call our Product Support group at 1-877-504-0233.
We apologize for this inconvenience. While there is no evidence of any fire hazard associated with the melting, Horizon assumes no risk for any consumer failing to act upon this service advisory.

Here is what the bulletin states:

Our service centers in the US, UK, and Germany have received several reports of short circuits occurring in the DX6i, melting some interior components. The cause for this issue is an incorrect trainer jack used in the assembly. Use of these incorrect trainer jacks by either a buddy cable or a flight simulator cable can create a short circuit, causing energy from batteries to be released in the form of heat inside the transmitter, melting interior components and generating smoke. Even if you do not currently use or plan to use your trainer jack, please return the transmitter for inspection.

Please complete the on-line request form here. For US and Canadian consumers, Horizon will pay for all ground shipping charges to and from our US service center. Customers outside the US and Canada should contact their retailer or local Spektrum distributor. Within Europe, please follow these links to our service centers in England or Germany. Australian consumers can follow this link. Any transmitters with PID other than HA906X or HA907X are not affected by this bulletin and do not need their trainer jacks inspected.

If you have any questions, please call our Product Support group at 1-877-504-0233.

We apologize for this inconvenience. While there is no evidence of any fire hazard associated with the melting, Horizon assumes no risk for any consumer failing to act upon this service advisory.

They must be so happy with their suppliers who build the DX6i, first the faulty pots on the sticks now this...
I guess it must be price and volume pressures that mean these faults have occurred in the dx6i but not the DX7. I suspect dx6i volumes ar a lot more than the DX7 despite what we see out at the field because of all those dx6i and heli RTF in a box packages.

However horizon hobby's willingness to step up and put things like this right FOC is to be admired. hope they aren't to busy fixing DX6's to repair my smashed receiver I sent them!

This is very embarrasing for Spectrum and Horizon.
To have one recall on a product is bad, but to have a second is very poor.

Its a good job that they are using Horizon to distribute or they might have lost alot more customers to other manufacturers.

    Hi

The DX7 is as far as I know still made for Horizon/Spektrum by JR so has Japanese quality control, the DX6i is made in China as I doubt if it could be made anywhere else for this price.
Overal a bloody good little radio which nothing else can touch for the money, the recalls are regretable but at least they seem to deal with this in the best way.

    Cheers
    Bob

I have just contacted Horizon Hobby Uk down in Essex on : 01279641097 to see if my TX was in the recall.Fortunately because mine is over a year old now I'm ok which is a bonus as I don't want to send it back in again for repairs.

I have just been told that it is only the Tx's that were made this year that are affected.
    Cheers Grant.

Kudos to Spectrum for actually having the balls to gett out there and address the probem with a recall. 95% of companies nowadays would ignore it for fear of bad press and brush it under the rug.

    Good informative post.
I guess the the codes are date based - 06 (June 2009) and 07 (July 2009). I would imagine they are being careful with the possible problem batch but it might be worth checking out any 05 and 08 codes just in case, while the repair option is available. Not sure what the definitive test is without a long cable!
    Full marks for coming clean.
    Mines OK furtunately.

Mine is HA907X so it's already under suspicion. I bought it brand new a few weeks ago. I've opted for Horizon to send me their testing device to see if mine is faulty.
