what's important to know is that your needle settings depend on the target headspeed.
Knowing this may avoid a lot of confusion. For example, I can run my YS 91 quite a bit leaner at 1800 RPM than at 2000.

Also, different carburetors work differently, regarding how the needles are mixed. For example, on YS, I'd proceed as follows (works for me, not much science involved otherwise):
    - factory settings, idle needle
    - 1 min hovered piro stuff
    - adjust mid needle tending towards rich
    - when satisfied, 1 min speed circles
    - adjust high needle for power
    - back to mid needle and iterate as needed

Engine tuning is a waste of time when the rear bearing is busted.
Engine tuning is a waste of time when the piston ring is worn.
Engine tuning is very difficult / futile when the engine suffers from pre-ignition, due to excessive compression and / or summer weather. It will idle badly, preferably backwards, run hot and may be very sensitive to small needle changes.
