Ben, I think I know what you are asking. I didn't want to alter the dual rates again after setting them like you said before so this is what I did - I think it achieves the same:
    • I switched on throttle hold
    • then put the throttle mid-stick
    • then switched on stunt mode
    • then switched off throttle hold
    • the motor slowly wound up (I expected it to instantly wizz into full revs but it didn't)
    • it sat stable on full revs
    • then I pulled the throttle stick to add negative pitch slowly all the way to the bottom
    • it did not try to flip and just pushed itself downwards
On a couple of occasions with trying the above the motor just stopped at full negative pitch and wouldn't restart until I'd reset all the switches - is that some sort of fail safe or is it a fault?

Well if it sits ok like that then it may be just the pilot, as for the motor stopping did you have travel adjust at 100 and d/r at 100? That may have caused it to bog down and stop with a fail safe overload.

Thanks again, Ben. I called into my local model shop this afternoon for some spare blades and one of the guys was kind enough to give it a fly and there's nothing wrong with the model (thanks Fastlads).
So now I can rule that out I can concentrate on practising.

I totally understand, the sim MCPX is far more stable than the real thing, it builds false confidence, for example you can give it full left or right rudder on sim and it will piro forever. Good luck trying that with the real thing.
Just keep the headspeed up and the dual rates down, your thumbs will catch up.

Good to hear that the mcpx is ok. Did the guy give you any tips, did you watch what he was doing?

Patience is the key. It does kind of click at some point. Hope it comes soon for you.

Yes actually, apparently you're supposed to use micro inputs on the sticks :-o
