  • First Heli & quick question

    Hi folks,

I've finally managed to get my first heli and all the other bits n pieces you need ( raptor 30v2 , OS 37 , JR 2610 radio & CSM HL200 Gyro ). I hope this should see me through the basics etc, just got to build it now. I prefer doing it from the ground up so I know whats what when things go pear shaped as I'm sure they will at some point.

Anyways, just 1 quick question. All the helis I have seen are fitted with header tanks, I presume that they are not essential but a good idea and would just like any thoughts as I still have to purchase a training undercarriage and might aswell get a tank at the same time if need be.

    Cheers, Craig.

    Craig,

There are two main reasons to buy a header tank, the obvious being you have a little extra fuel = a little extra time in the air. The primary reason is for 3D flying.

If you get into 3D you will find that as your fuel tank empties, the chance of the fuel leaning out as you through it around the air without a header will increase the clunk will undoubtably miss the fuel every now and again. By having a header for the engine to draw its fuel from which is 100% full of fuel all of the time unless you've emptied your main tank, this will ensure that no lean points occur and give a better more reliable engine RPM.

They are only about 15.00 and even though they will not be a necessity for you right now, there would be no harm in fitting one. If I'm right I'm sure the V2 comes with a header fixing point.

    Hope this helps you.
    Cheers
    Stuart

I added one when only hovering and found that the engine seemed to prefer running with the header tank. I picked up one from QuickUK but there are cheaper alternatives.

I believe that the ideal is for the output of the header tank to be in link with the carb.

Good luck with the new heli, would be interesting to hear your comments on the OS37. I had the OS32 in my old heli which proved to be very reliable over the 3.5 years I was running it.

You will really enjoy building the Rappy 30 I have just put together a Rappy 50 and was extremely pleased with the kit, parts and manual.

The 50 heli is a dream to fly, really rock solid in hover and forward flight. I think the 30 is just as good and I wish now that I had spent a few quid more on my 1st heli and got a Raptor.
