  • TT 39 Question

I am running a Thunder Tiger 39 engine in my Rappy v2, problem is the engine backplate is very hot to touch after i have been flying around with it.
So far the engine has had about a gallon of fuel through, still running rich at just over 3 turns on the main, good ammount of smoke coming out the pipe.
    Fuel is Bekra 10
    Pipe is Weston one piece

    Question is:
Does anybody else has a similar problem?
    and,
I know the TT has rubish bearings in and fail after about four gallons, could this be the problem.

Otherwise the engine is running great, bogs a bit at +10, but i think that is from running slightly rich

Have a look here, this could be your problem on the back plate.

This sounds to me like the fan/clutch has come loose on the top of the crank and has unwound itself up into the clutch bell which when you remove the back plate allows the crank to be moved down slightly and free it up.

The thing to do is take the back plate off again and have a look on the inside surface to see if there is any scoring of the metal, this is a good indication if the crank is hitting the back plate or not.

      Hi
I've checked the backplate previously and there is no scoring and no play in the crankshaft from an loosened nut.

If you have loads of smoke and three turns on the main, no back plate scoring and its running fine, then I would say that its okay...

Engine cooling is created only by two factors, good airflow from fan and large oil content in the fuel. I can't find the oil content for Bekra 10%, so I would consider changing to a larger oil content fuel..the Raptor 30 V2 from memory has a larger fan shround than the V1 so I would say that you'll have as much airflow as you can get.

          Hi Stuartn
The Bekra is specifically heli fuel based on Klotz synthetic 18%, carry on trying with it and see what happens, it was more a concern as my OS 32 is a lot cooler in my Nexus on the same fuel and a tuned pipe.
          Thanks

            Hi Squid,

I think the 39 motors do run quite hot, my Irvine 39 does, I dont think its anything to worry about, just make sure it is running nice and rich without being overly so and you'll be fine.

            Good thinking there though Stu

            Cheers,

            Pete.

The backplate is the thermometer of the engine.
Curtis's tip "if you've heard it, it can stand repeating"
After a flight immediately on landing you should be able to hold you finger comfortably on the backplate for a few seconds - if you can't it's running to hot.
This has to be done the instant you switch the motor off as the heat from the head /exhaust will be transfering to the back plate as the engine cools down.
