Default What needed to get started with a Trex700n?

    Hi,

I've just got a Trex700N but I'm a bit lost on what I need to get it in the air. I haven't flown nitro before so I don't have any of the required gear?

Starter, I don't know if I can use a normal one (the ones used for planes or does it need to be thinner/smaller?) adding the starter shaft.
    Starter shaft, what size?
Fuel pump, I don't know what it is, is it to put the fuel in to the heli's fuel tank or to pump the fuel from the tank to the engine?
Glow plug igniter (I guess any would be ok, like to ones used for rc nitro cars?)
Fuel (what nitro %? Would I have to modify the engine cam depending on the %?)

    Am I missing anything?

    Thanks in advanced!

Starter = you need to get a hex starter shaft to fit in your existing starter ortherwise get something like the align super starter
Fuel pump = its to get the fuel from the bottle to the tank, a hand pump is perfect
Glow plug igniter, what electrics came with the heli? the align 2 in 1 regulator also glows the plug
fuel = personal prefernce, i use Optifuel 20%

What engine do you have? if its pumped then you will need to check what pipes to clamp and fill from when filling the tank

I don't have any starter. For what I've seen Align starters are quite expensive, is it possible to ad the hex shaft to any plane starter?

It's fitted with an align 91 engine
It has got a 5000 mil 6v battery and remote glow, I don't know if that glows the plug (I don't have the heli yet)

you will need quite a good starter to turn over a 90 sized engine. If I was you I would wait untill you get the heli and see what onboard glow it has, then call midland helis or fastlad and have a chat with them and get them to reccomend a starter. I have the align starter and love the fact the lipo is in the starter and you dont have to have a seperate batt

Watch the dynatron gang come along but Ive got a Align super starter and never had any problems.. starts my 91 no problems.. I love it because its compact & neat. The cup sizes are usually 6mm and you can adapt a cordless drill in reverse with the appropriate hex size to save some pennies but just get a dedicated starter

Yes its to fill up the helis tank. Something like this is fine Fast fueller hand crank pump a-2056

Does your 700 come with the Align 2 in 1? if it does you need not worry about it as its built in, otherwise any would be ok

Im using 20% Opti SLV.. more than I ever need with my flying atm. The question is at what level is your flying? lower for learning/less waste/cost higher content for the more hardcore flyer. You dont have to modify any cams?.. just tweek the needles till its running on song.. or if your struggling to get it tuned add the extra shim to the head.. basically 0.1m for up to 20%, 0.2m shim for 30% and you can use both shims 0.3m for easier tuning. I just used a 0.2 for the 20% im using

I´ll take your word, Thanks! I´m sure I´ll need it...

I live in Netley, very close to Southampton by the toll bridge. Where do you normally fly at?

I´m getting the heli next Monday. I was actually after electric (I normally fly a Trex500) but some how ended up with a Nitro... so now I don´t even know what I need to get it running...

Oh ok my mother lives in Netley. I fly at a field next to the M271 in Redbridge. I went from electric to Nitro and love it and plus you can fly all day long. You will have to meet up with us sometime.

By all means, get some help.

There are some experiences you'd rather avoid (engine doesn't start, plug gets wet, hydrolock, or then it hot starts).

    Your "plan B":
You can shut down a nitro engine by blocking the exhaust (there's a fat silicon tube at the end of the muffler where the hot gases come out. Squeeze it shut and it will lose power within a fraction of a second, and stop after one second or two). Don't do it regularly as it's hard on the bearings.

And, practise your autos in the sim. Sooner or later you'll need them (busted plug, out of fuel, or the favourite of OS owners, "hole in the piston" ...)
